  1.  “Alan Johnson built our kitchen at Gypsy House in 1984. It has certainly stood the test of time and, as my husband, Roald Dahl, said in the introduction to Roald Dahl’s Cookbook, ‘A great deal of human traffic moves through Gypsy House and more than 100 suppers, not to mention lunches, are devoured here with gusto every week of the year’. I love my kitchen, as indeed do the many wonderful chefs who have cooked in it.”Liccy Dahl, Buckinghamshire
  2. “Alan Johnson was commissioned by me to build a wardrobe designed along Feng Shui principles. As such I had a very specific set of requirements that the piece needed to comply with, together with my budget and the final location of the wardrobe. I was aware these requirements would prove a challenge. Not only did Alan painstakingly consult with me on the smallest of details, he was patient, added value design suggestions and meticulously carried out some of the more unusual design features I needed incorporating. The quality of the craftsmanship and the materials used have been much admired and the wardrobe’s dual function as a Feng Shui cure and somewhere to put my clothes has been fulfilled to the highest standard and my absolute delight. If you are looking for a unique beautifully crafted piece of furniture, I would not hesitate to recommend Alan Johnson.” Catherine Howie, Energy Alignment, North London
  3. “Alan Johnson’s work at my home demonstrates craftsmanship of the very highest standard. He takes real pride in creating beautifully finished and elegant furniture and I would unhesitatingly recommend him.” Nicholas Hytner, Director, National Theatre, London.  “Your work was impeccable throughout, from the care in listening, preparing drawings, asking questions to installation on site. It was seamless and reliable with total personal commitment throughout. I cannot thank you enough.” Phil Meadowcroft, Meadowcroft Griffin Architects, North London
  4. “Alan Johnson produced a fantastic storage system, which comprises wardrobes and drawers, for an awkward space in our bedroom. From start to finish, Alan was excellent. He came up with a fabulous design, gave us advice on types of wood and finishing touches, invited us to visit the workshop to witness the storage system being crafted and, last but not least, was very tidy in our home when he was fitting the storage system! The finished product says it all – this is a man with a real talent for carpentry. To meet someone who genuinely is interested in and proud of his work is truly refreshing and inspiring.” Kim and Russell, London NW6
  5. “Now that you have finished all the fitted furniture in our house, I am writing to thank you and your team for everything that you have done for us over the past nine months. We are delighted with all the furniture and cannot praise you enough for the care and attention you have given us. The design is superb and the craftsmanship is impeccable. Everything has been finished on time and to budget. We had not realised what a difference good quality modern joinery could make to the interior of our home and we wish we had had your advice when we first moved in here sixteen years ago. Now, finally, the ground floor rooms of our house work properly for us, and each room has a unity. The fitted bookshelves in the living room have hugely increased our book storage capacity and they are such a pleasure to look at. The warm brown American Oak was a perfect choice. We had not thought that fitted shelves in a Victorian house would ever fit perfectly, as the chimney breast and walls are not quite straight. The study has worked out perfectly for us. Here again your choice of wood was an excellent one. The lighter American Maple was just right for this north-facing room. The moving filing cabinets are a great boon, as they allow us easy access to the shelves in the corners, and the drop-down desk is going to be invaluable when we use this room occasionally as a dining room for eight people. The filing cabinets themselves are very sturdy, and that increases their capacity. The whole design of the new study is perfect for us. The desks are very comfortable to use and the shelves fit beautifully around the walls and chimney breasts. Once again, our sincere thanks” Gordon Higgott, Senior Historian, English Heritage
  6. “When we first approached Alan Johnson about the possibility of doing some work for us, we were very impressed by the quality of references he was able to provide. Everyone he put us in touch with was genuinely enthusiastic and keen to recommend him. Now that we’ve seen what he can do, first with the re-design of the kitchen, and then with the library shelves, we would like to add our names to the list of referees. Here is a list of what made your outfit so special for us: Endless patience and care in finding out what we wanted – even when we were not sure ourselves Really good advice and design input Fantastically high standards of craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail Excellent project management skills – you found plumbers, electricians, floor layers etc, got firm quotes and scheduled their work – which took an enormous burden off our shoulders And, very much not least; you and all the people you brought into our house were unfailingly courteous and considerate I’m sure we will be back with more work. In the meantime we will continue to take deep and daily pleasure in your craftsmanship.” John Morrison and Judy Lee, North London
